Capturing a behavior of your dog means marking it (= indicating the behavior is desired with a word like "yes" or a gesture like a thumbs up) and reinforcing it (= giving or removing something that will increase the likelihood the behavior will be repeated) the moment your dog performs it on his own, without being asked to do so.
Basically, it's like taking a picture of a behavior you want to see repeated.
Capturing is passive training: you wait for your dog to produce, on his own, the behaviors you want to reinforce. It can be used on skills that your dog already has, that he will exhibit on his own, such as sitting.
For examples :
▶︎ You would train your dog to come to you by "capturing" it.
You say no word before.
If and when your dog is coming to you spontaneously, you praise and reward him.
During the first times, your dog will "only" appreciate your enthusiasm. Later on, little by little (can vary depending on your dog's capacities), he'll associate with the fact he is coming to you.
You'll then be able to add a word when he starts producing the behavior of coming to you ; he will have already figured out that coming to you is beneficial to him.
▶︎ You would train your dog to stop by "capturing" it.
You say no word and do not act upon the leash or long line.
If and when your dog stops on his own, you praise and reward him.
He' ll then figure out that when he stops, it's beneficial to him.
▶︎ You would train your dog to go more on his bed when you are working with your computer by "capturing" it.
If and when your dog goes there on his own, on his own initiative, when you are facing your computer, you praise and reward him, particularly at this moment.
He will associate the two events and will consider that going on his bed when you are facing your computer is beneficial to him.
